Fans know all about Jelly Roll‘s troubled past.
Really, everyone does — he’s been quite open about it. He spent much of his youth and young adulthood in jail and prison, including at the Metro-Davidson County Detention Facility in Nashville.
Now a celebrated country music star, Jelly has turned his life around, and the same Music City jail he spent so much time in gifted him a symbolic key to a cell.
Wanting to be sure he never forgets his past — and never loses the key — Jelly Roll had it blinged-out with more than 150 carats of diamonds and put it on a necklace.
Once complete, the necklace was hand-delivered by Icebox Jewelers to the singer on opening night of his just-launched Beautifully Broken Tour in Utah.
In a video shared to Instagram, Jelly Roll admires the work with some choice words and special zoom-ins on the diamonds. Watch below:
The chain of Jelly Roll’s new necklace features mini handcuffs that connect to each other, forming an unbreakable chain. There are several sets.
“The Nashville, Tennessee Davidson County sheriff gave me a key to the jail for all the work I do since I got out of there,” the star explains. “So I ended up with a key to the same jail that I was in.”
“This is the redemption chain, that’s what we are calling this. Set of handcuffs for every time I’ve been in handcuffs,” he notes.
Zooming in, you can see each that pair of cuffs has a plaque noting the dates Jelly Roll was locked up.
As Jelly Roll puts the chain around his neck in the clup, he looks down at it and says, “Tonight is the night, baby!”
What a full-circle moment for Jelly Roll to be able to wear this necklace as a reminder of his past, and how he won’t ever be returning to jail — at least not as a prisoner. He continues to do work to help others who are struggling with addiction and the law.
